Fat Man Presents... Venice Is Sinking with Deaf Judges, Casper & the Cookies, Fairmount Fair, Buddy System and Matias
Saturday May. 17, 2008 at 9:00 PM
A dark jangle pop sound, sometimes like a sinister Galaxie 500, sometimes like a more upbeat Low, Venice Is Sinking has a trancey, dramatic, shoegaze quality that can just as flawlessly shift into an upbeat pop song, much in the same vein as Belle & Sebastian. Soft spoken words lead by mesmerizing viola solos are the frontline of this dreamy pop 5-piece that has been called "the perfect soundtrack for unexpected overcast days" by Pitchfork Media and "pop's long awaited changing of the guard" by Magnet. Though for the past few years the band's live show has been a mainstay in most Athens venues (playing a more diverse variety of venues than most bands in town), the band has been a bit in hiding lately from live audiences while traveling out of town to record their 2nd full-length CD, following 2006's "Sorry About The Flowers" released by One Percent Press. Catch them live now before they go back into hiding.

Rhett Akins with Deepstep
Friday Jun. 13, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Some men are just born to be country singers. It has nothing to do with chart positions, signed deals or marketing plans. It has everything to do with a rowdy Friday night crowd singing along to a song you just wrote because they’ve immediately embraced the words. You’ve written about your life and theirs and the connection has nothing to do with music industry politics and everything to do with honest communication and gut reaction. Just ask Rhett Akins. The talented singer/songwriter is back with a new collection of songs, People Like Me, that reflect the life he leads on stage and off as a loving father, avid outdoorsman and a quintessential everyman who has much in common with the audiences he’s been singing to for more than a decade.
